Word.
On sort of the same note:
One thing I have heard it complained about, in regards to Katrina, is that people (such as civil personel) were waiting for orders, instead of taking initiative. It was suggested that the “go get ‘em” american spirit has been quashed by both our fear of litigation, and our being whipped by the office environment.
I just think there arn’t enough cowboys in the world. There’re enough Maureen Ohara’s, but are there any John Waynes left, to turn ‘em over their knees?
Reinventing the wheel
You know how many protestants believe something like the true message of christianity being garbled by the catholics for 1500 or so years? Catholics just got it wrong for that long.
Ok… this is going to be kind of like that.
I saw the plans for the new church. The interior drawings are aesthetically pleasing. There’s a big crucifix, you can find the tabrinacle… The church is sort of a diamond shape with pews curving around the altar… and on one side of the altar is the organ, and the other the choir.
It’s a perfectly balanced drawing, really. A nice sloping contrast in hight between the choir rafters and the organ on the other side.
Other issues aside, there’s a major functionality issue–you’re seperating the choir from the director, who’s playing the organ. They have enough trouble staying together when they can SEE the organ. Now we’re going to put a priest, some bushes and a big altar table between the people and the choir director. Disaster waiting to happen.
I like choir lofts. The typical configuration has the organist facing said choir, and the choir can be on rafters without fear of being in the way or a distraction. Choir lofts have worked for… I dunno… how many years? Do we think we’re smarter than millenia of church archetects, because we’re post-vatican II, and therefore more enlightened? I suspect so.
So because we’re so smart we’re going to stick the musicians right up front, as though they were of some sort of importance. In fact, if they’re right up front, it’s almost like you’re saying the musicians have a roll approaching that of the priest, or are of an importance approaching that of the Eucharist or the Word of God.
I like working in the background. If I’m doing my job, people should know something’s happening (duh, they can HEAR music), but not see the inner-trappings. If I’ve done my job, I’ve served a purpose and made something a little more beautiful, without needing to take center stage and take a big bow.
…I guess it gets back into the worship of self thing that I’m always harping about.
No one likes old style churches because they’re “stuffy.” But they WORKED. They were, as they were for a REASON.
Yes. Yes I am.
